My name is Tom Nguyen, and I am an academic department chair at the school for legal studies. I have been doing this for about five years now. In the past, I have worked as a paralegal and supervised paralegals. I have also done a lot of work for places, such as GTE world headquarters working on intellectual property law, the Department of the Navy, and the White House as an intern working on agency liaison and working with lawyers. I bring a lot of experience into the classrooms whenever I can.
At the top online paralegal school most of the teachers are lawyers. They are licensed lawyers and have to have had paralegal experience. That means they have worked as a paralegal, supervised paralegals, or trained paralegals. They all have terminal degrees to teach law.
My main focus is the reader or the student comes through the end of the course knowing all the fundamental things they have to have in order to succeed in a certain area of law, whether it's business organizations, contract law, or introduction to paralegal studies. Most attorneys that hire paralegals want them to have knowledge about law and civil litigation to help prepare a case. This is from the initial intake interview through the different phases whether it is civil litigation through the appeals process if needed.
Online education offers a great preparation for that because students actually sit in classes where the instructors not only teach the law, but they practice it everyday. Application of the law that lawyers can share with many online students can help them to see a different view. At many traditional schools, teachers teach and research all day. That is fine and good, but you need to have a practical application as well.
